Dry Eye/Ocular Surface Disease
Dry Eye/Ocular
Surface Disease
Common Condition
Dry Eye/OSD is a common condition where the surface of the eye is not able to maintain good lubrication. Symptoms of dry eye include intermittent blurry vision, sharp eye pain, foreign body sensation, and burning.
This chronic and progressive disease is widespread in Arizona given the heat in our environment and exposure to air conditioning. Use of computer/phone screens and extensive reading may worsen the symptoms of ocular surface disease.
Treatment of dry eyes is often done in a stepwise manner focusing on the quality and the quantity of tears.

Procedural Options
Punctal Plugs: A quick, painless procedure to help to prevent drainage of tears from surface; typically covered by insurance after conservative therapies fail. A collagen form may last 3-6 months before dissolving, a silicone form may last longer.
Cauterization of Conjunctivochalasis: Helps to shrink excessive/wrinkled tissue for smoother distribution of tears; typically covered by insurance.
Meibomian Gland Treatment: Use of a medical device to help blocked/clogged oil glands to release oils adequately into the tear film. Our office provides the newest technology radiofrequency treatment of these glands which has the “side effect” of wrinkle reduction and skin tightening around the eye in addition to treatment of dry eye. This procedure requires a minimum of three treatment sessions and is not covered by insurance.
Amniotic Membrane: A disk with healing proteins placed over the cornea and worn for about 1 week to encourage healing of the surface; typically covered by insurance.
